What are Proton Pump Inhibitors?
Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid are part of a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by reducing the amount of acid in a person's stomach. These medications may also be prescribed to treat heartburn, inflammation of the esophagus and stomach ulcers. All three PPIs are also now available over the counter.
