WHAT ARE IVC FILTERS?
An inferior vena cava filter, or IVC filter, is a device implanted in the inferior vena cava that is designed to catch blood clots before they reach the lungs. However, many patients using these devices have reported injuries or complications due to the device fracturing or migrating and causing damage.
FDA WARNING ABOUT IVC FILTERS
Since 2010, the FDA has collected hundreds of reports of injuries caused by broken or migrating devices, especially to the heart and lungs. Beginning in May 2014, the FDA issued a warning calling for the removal of all devices as soon as possible once the risk of pulmonary embolism has passed. Unfortunately, many patients who had a device implanted for a short-term problem were not aware of the risks and the device was left in too long, resulting in injury.
